 Angora goat

Mohair is the silky hair of the Angora goat.

Mukhayyar : " the chosen one, the most beautiful " it is of this Arabian-Persian word that originates the word mohair, name of the fleece of the Angora goat.

ORIGIN :
The origin of the Angora goat is Turkey. Its name comes from Ankara, which was formerly called angora.
Its very soft fleece, with incomparable qualities was already looked for in Asia more than twelve centuries ago. From the 4th century before Christ, tablets of Summer testify of the presence of the Angora goats, Greeks of the antiquity tell the famous history of Jason and the golden fleece.
This goat was first time introduced in France in the 15th century, but did not resist to the famine.

BREEDING:
CHARACTER Of gregarious instinct, rustic, lively and docile. Perfect weed eater, it adapts itself to all grounds and all climates.
REPRODUCTION The births take place in March.

FLEECE
SHEARING Twice a year, generally at beginning of February and end of August.
PRODUCTION Kids are cropped since the age of 6 months, one grown-up goat produces between 3 and 4 kilos of mohair a year. The more the lock is "curled", the more fibers are thin. The diameter of the hair can vary from 20 to 50 microns, that of the kid or " kid mohair " is lower than 30 microns.

TRANSFORMATION The meticulous sorting of fleeces eliminates thick fibers " jarreuse " and separate them in 6 categories of fineness. All the fibers go through all the traditional stages of spinning and dyeing. Specificity, the mohair dyes magnificently.
ADVICE FROM BERNARD : To protect oneself from the cold, nothing worth like a natural and light fiber which is easily to look after and resists to time.
